Emergency Department & Urgent Care Referrals

Sometimes, our office will authorize you to go to the Emergency Room or an Urgent Care facility when our schedule does not permit us to see you for an acute condition or if it is after hours. If you are seen at one of these types of facilities please let us know so that we may obtain a copy of your records from your visit, if needed.

Many insurance companies require patients to obtain a referral or authorization from their primary care physician for the emergency room or urgent care visit. If your insurance company requires a referral, it is your responsibility to contact our office so that we may process the authorization. When calling our office, please be prepared to provide the name of the facility in which you were seen, the first and last name of the doctor you saw, the diagnosis you were given, the date of your visit and the phone and fax numbers of the office where the referral needs to be faxed. Please allow two weeks for the completion of your referral/authorization. If you fail to obtain a referral, you may be left with a big bill from the facility.

Often after being seen at an urgent care facility, you are instructed to see your primary care physician the next business day for a followup appointment. Before scheduling this appointment, please call our office and speak with a nurse. Frequently, it is better to wait a few days to be seen so that the prescribed treatment for the condition or emergency can be properly assessed.
